Holiday cottages in Dorset at Renscombe, Worth Matravers, Isle of Purbeck
One of the most beautiful villages on the Isle of Purbeck, Worth Matravers can trace its history back to pre-Roman times. Still in evidence are the medieval strip lynchets, terraces that were cut into the steep hillsides, allowing the land to be cultivated more easily. These lead down to the dramatic cliffs and ledges of Winspit and Seacombe and the Dorset Coastal Path, which passes St Aldhelms Head and winds around and down to Chapmans Pool. From there the path continues westwards up the cliffs of Houns Tout and on eventually to Minehead, 500 miles away.
Farming, stone quarrying and fishing were once the mainstay of the local economy and these industries, together with tourism, still continue today.
Although only having a population of 650 people, Worth Matravers is a real community with a popular pub, the Square and Compass, tea rooms and one of the prettiest Norman Churches in Dorset, St Nicholas of Myra. The village green, with its charming duck pond and picturesque cottages, features in many visitors' photos and is a good starting point for many of the walks in the area.
